Yves Saint Laurent was born on 1 August 1936 in Oran, Algeria, and died on 1 June 2008 in Paris. The giant of French fashion was a mere 21 when he took over as head designer of the House of Dior in 1957. Several years later, with the help of his partner Pierre Bergé, he decided to launch his own label. The YSL logo was designed by Adolphe Mouron, better known as Cassandre.
Enthralled by exoticism throughout his life, Yves Saint Laurent was the first fashion designer to use Asian and African models in his shows. His first haute couture collection was presented in 1962.
The current creative director is Hedi Slimane. Saint Laurent collections take their inspiration from men's clothing, the colours of its creator's Algerian childhood and the palette of the great painters.
The Le Smoking tuxedo suit for women remains the label's signature item, the epitome of Parisian elegance.
Le Smoking, the Mondrian dress, the African dress, the Saharan, the trouser suit, the see-through dress, and Muse, Easy and Chyc bags.
